Spiro Secures $215 Million to Expand Battery-Swapping Network Across Africa

Electric Mobility Infrastructure Gets a Boost as Spiro Raises Fresh Capital

Electric motorcycle startup Spiro has announced a significant funding round of $215 million, signaling growing investor confidence in the company’s battery-swapping infrastructure model. This latest investment brings Spiro’s total fundraising to over $415 million since 2023, positioning it as one of Africa’s best-funded electric mobility operators.

The round includes backing from Impact Fund Denmark and Equitane, following previous investments from Afreximbank’s Fund for Export Development in Africa (FEDA) and a debt facility earlier this year. Spiro plans to use the funds to expand its network of battery-swapping stations, increase local manufacturing capacity, and add renewable energy infrastructure like solar-powered swap stations.

Rapid Expansion Across Multiple Markets

Since launching in 2022, Spiro has rapidly expanded operations across seven countries: Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, and Cameroon. The company now operates over 100,000 electric motorcycles with a network of more than 2,500 battery-swapping stations—facilitating over 30 million swaps to date.

Building More Than Just Motorcycles

Spiro’s success highlights a key trend in Africa’s EV sector: the shift from vehicle sales to infrastructure development. Unlike traditional automotive models where revenue comes from one-time purchases, companies like Spiro generate recurring income through battery swapping services and network usage.

“This investment validates our vision of building comprehensive electric mobility ecosystems,” said Gagan Gupta, founder of Spiro. “We’re focused on creating reliable, accessible charging solutions that support widespread adoption of electric two-wheelers.”

The company aims to expand into Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo next, further extending its reach across the continent while navigating new operational challenges.

The Infrastructure Advantage

Battery swapping offers several advantages over traditional charging in African markets: faster turnaround times for riders, reduced range anxiety, and lower upfront investment costs for users. As Spiro’s network grows, each additional station increases the value proposition for all users through improved convenience and reliability—creating a positive feedback loop that strengthens its market position.
