Nigeria Invests $6.1 Million in Expert Consulting for National Fiber Project
Nigeria Sets Stage for Digital Transformation with Strategic Consulting Investment
The Nigerian government is making a significant early investment of $6.1 million in consulting services to support the rollout of its ambitious national fiber expansion project, according to a recent World Bank procurement report. This move underscores both the complexity of building digital infrastructure and Nigeria’s commitment to transforming into a knowledge-based economy.
The consulting engagements cover transaction advisory, legal compliance, technical planning, environmental impact assessments, and capacity development—all crucial elements for ensuring the project’s success. The largest individual contracts are valued at $1.5 million each, with one already signed for a transaction advisor who will help structure the project’s financing.
Key Highlights of the Investment:
- Scope: Consulting services represent a critical early investment in a $2 billion initiative to expand Nigeria’s fiber-optic network from 35,000 km to 125,000 km—a nearly fourfold increase.
- Expertise: The engagements will bring in specialists in various domains including:
- Legal and regulatory compliance
- Technical planning and infrastructure design
- Environmental and social impact mitigation
- Supply chain optimization
- Workforce skills development
- Transparency: All transactions will be tracked through the World Bank’s STEP platform to ensure adherence to international procurement standards.
The project has already secured over $1.1 billion in funding commitments from partners including the World Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, European Union, and domestic lenders—demonstrating strong confidence in Nigeria’s digital future.
