GITEX Africa: From Hype to Outcomes as Fourth Edition Opens in Morocco
GITEX Africa Shifts Focus from Attendance to Tangible Results
The fourth annual GITEX Africa kicked off yesterday in Marrakech, signaling a clear evolution for the event. Organizers are moving beyond mere showcases of potential and emphasizing real-world outcomes.
From Ambition to Execution
Once characterized by lofty promises of becoming Africa’s tech hub, GITEX is now being evaluated on what attendees actually achieve. Mohammed Drissi Melyani, Director-General of Morocco’s Digital Development Agency, noted that the event is transforming into a platform for digital inclusion across African markets.
Morocco’s Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, stated directly: “GITEX Africa Morocco has become far more than an annual exhibition. It is a real platform for building partnerships and creating opportunities.” This sentiment reflects a broader industry shift toward accountability in tech events.
Real Business Outcomes Reported
Several returning startups confirmed tangible benefits from previous editions. Abdoul Zakari, co-founder of Niger’s Sako fintech, reported closing deals that generated revenue in 2024 after attending last year—without raising capital. He’s back this year seeking similar results.
Amsa, founder of Senegal’s Kaycber transit payments startup, said he secured a partnership just weeks before the event, demonstrating how GITEX can facilitate connections and accelerate growth.
Nigeria’s Changing Presence
While some countries had large pavilions, Nigeria’s presence was notably reduced. NITDA (Nigeria’s tech regulator) sponsored only 10 startups this year compared to 12 last year, with the agency covering just booth costs.
The shift reflects a new policy where startups must demonstrate commitment by funding their own travel and accommodation—a move intended to ensure greater engagement from participants.
Despite the reduced sponsorship, six of the selected Nigerian startups were present at the event, showcasing solutions ranging from contactless payment systems to safety tech addressing transportation risks.
