From Township Boot Sales to Global Tech Stage: Luvuyo Rani's Vision for Africa
Bridging the Digital Divide with Community-Based Solutions
Luvuyo Rani, a South African tech entrepreneur who built a multi-million dollar business selling computers from his car boot, is now sharing his model for digital inclusion on an international stage. Speaking at the University of Colorado’s World Affairs Conference, alongside delegates from 60 countries, Rani emphasized Africa’s growing importance in global conversations about technology and opportunity.
From Hardship to Innovation
Rani’s journey began in the townships where he helped his mother run an illegal shebeen (drinking den) while dodging police raids. These experiences instilled in him a deep understanding of community needs and resilience—qualities that would inform his tech business, Silulo Ulutho Technologies.
A One-Stop Tech Solution for Communities
Silulo addresses the digital divide by offering affordable IT services, training, and hardware directly to residents and small businesses in underserved areas. The company operates 46 centers across South African townships, providing:
- Computer literacy courses for all ages
- Entrepreneurship training that has supported over 400 new businesses
- Affordable access to computers and internet connectivity
- Specialized skills in AI, cybersecurity, and social media
Scaling Impact Across Africa
Rani’s ambition extends beyond South Africa. He envisions replicating his model in Kenya, Botswana, Lesotho, and Swaziland—creating a network of 200+ community tech centers across the continent. A recent investment from Astron Energy will help fund this expansion.
“Our approach is to build local capacity rather than just providing solutions,” Rani explained. “By training people in digital skills and supporting entrepreneurship, we’re creating pathways out of poverty and unlocking economic opportunities within communities.”
With an estimated 100,000 people trained over the past two decades, Silulo is proving that technology can be a powerful tool for social transformation—one community center at a time.
