Rank Launches Community Finance Products to Expand Access to Capital in Nigeria
Rank Launches Community Finance Solutions Targeting Unserved Businesses
Nigerian fintech startup Rank (formerly Moni) has unveiled three new financial products designed to tap into the continent’s traditional community-based savings systems. The move aims to provide a digital pathway to zero-interest capital for individuals and small businesses often excluded from formal banking services.
The launch includes:
- Money Circles: A digitized version of rotating savings groups (ROSCAs) like ajo, esusu, etc.
- Tribe: For existing communities to manage shared finances digitally.
- Rank Perks: Payroll product offering salary-backed credit and workplace savings circles.
Addressing a Critical Financing Gap
The company highlights that only 4% of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in Nigeria have access to formal bank loans. By digitizing community finance, Rank seeks to extend financial inclusion to entrepreneurs and workers who remain underserved by traditional lenders.
This strategy builds on Rank’s recent acquisitions of AjoMoney and Zazzau Microfinance Bank, which provided a regulated banking license and expanded the company’s product offerings beyond credit into savings, payments, and wealth management.
“For generations, Africans have relied on communal financial structures to build wealth,” said Femi Iromini, CEO and co-founder of Rank. “We’re bringing these trusted traditions into the modern age with technology that solves trust issues and turns collective habits into a generational wealth engine.”
The Money Circles product digitizes rotating savings schemes, allowing users to join circles, make monthly contributions, and receive lump-sum payouts when their turn arrives—even if other members default.
Tribe enables families, friends, or colleagues to manage shared financial goals in one digital space. Meanwhile, Rank Perks allows employers to offer staff salary-backed credit alongside company-wide savings programs with automatic deductions from monthly paychecks.
Rank has already facilitated over $100 million in payouts across various communities and aims to compete effectively in a consumer finance market that includes PiggyVest, Cowrywise, and other digital platforms—while differentiating through its community-centric approach.
