Nigeria Gains Seat in International AI Governance Body

The Nigerian Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has been inaugurated as a founding member of the AI for Good Global Commission. This new international body, established by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), aims to shape responsible AI governance frameworks globally.

Africa secured 8 out of the commission’s 44 seats—a significant representation reflecting the continent’s growing importance in technology policy discussions. The inaugural meeting took place on July 8th in Geneva during the AI for Good Global Summit, bringing together leaders from government, industry, academia, and international organizations.

Tijani’s appointment underscores Nigeria’s progress in building a responsible AI ecosystem through strategic investments in digital infrastructure, talent development, research, innovation, and governance frameworks.
