Moniepoint Enters East Africa with Acquisition of Kenyan Lender Sumac

Moniepoint Acquires Sumac Bank to Accelerate Regional Expansion

Nigerian fintech unicorn Moniepoint Inc. has made a strategic entry into Kenya’s market by acquiring a 78% controlling stake in Sumac Microfinance Bank, a 20-year-old institution. This acquisition provides Moniepoint with a deposit-taking license – essential for its credit-focused growth strategy – while bypassing the Central Bank of Kenya’s current freeze on new banking licenses.

The deal allows Moniepoint to immediately offer a wider range of financial services in East Africa’s largest economy, positioning it to compete with established players in the SME lending space. Sumac currently serves over 300,000 customers across various sectors including agriculture, education, and trade finance.

This acquisition follows Moniepoint’s recent purchase of Nigerian software firm Orda, demonstrating a clear pattern of acquiring complementary businesses to expand its product offerings. The company plans to deploy its “business-in-a-box” model – which combines SaaS tools with financial services – into Kenya’s evolving digital lending market.

The move reflects a broader trend of consolidation and licensing among African fintech companies seeking sustainable growth in increasingly regulated environments. By acquiring an existing lender, Moniepoint gains immediate access to infrastructure, customer relationships, and regulatory approvals that would take years to build organically.
