Meta Partners With Nigerian Government to Launch AI Academy, Offering $5,000 Prizes

Meta and FG Collaborate on AI Talent Development in Nigeria

In a significant boost for the nation’s tech ecosystem, Meta has launched AI Academy Nigeria in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy (FMCIDE). The initiative aims to equip Nigerian developers, startups, students, and early-career professionals with practical AI skills through three key streams:

AI Skills Development Track

This track offers free courses on generative AI fundamentals using Meta’s AI models via platforms like Coursera, DeepLearning.AI, and DataCamp. Topics include building generative AI applications with Llama, prompt engineering, and utilizing AI in social media marketing.

The top 100 performers will receive scholarships for paid Meta Blueprint certifications and up to $5,000 in advertising credits.

Startup Pitchathon

Early-stage Nigerian startups leveraging Meta’s AI technologies can apply to pitch their solutions. The deadline is August 21st, with shortlisted finalists pitching at GITEX Nigeria on September 3rd.

The two winning startups will each receive $5,000 in funding and $2,000 in advertising credits, along with an all-expenses-paid trip to Istanbul for Meta’s AI Summit on November 23–24.

Developer Bootcamp

This six-week intensive program, delivered by Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (RAIN), provides hands-on development experience, technical guidance, and access to Meta’s AI experts.

Key Quotes:

  • “This partnership will equip developers, entrepreneurs, and young professionals with practical AI skills while creating pathways for startups to compete globally,” said Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy.
  • “Nigeria is home to some of Africa’s most dynamic AI talent, but founders and developers need greater access to training, funding, and platforms to build impactful solutions,” added Sade Dada, Head of Public Policy for Anglophone West Africa at Meta.

The initiative aligns with the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) program’s goal of building Nigeria’s technical capacity while connecting skills development with digital economy opportunities. Applications for the Startup Pitchathon are open until August 21st.
