Jem HR Secures $8.4 Million Series A Funding for Workforce Management Platform
Jem HR Raises $8.4 Million to Expand into Comprehensive Workforce Management
South African startup Jem HR has announced an $8.4 million Series A funding round led by Quona Capital, marking a significant milestone in the company’s evolution from its origins as SmartWage in 2019.
Jem HR initially focused on providing employees with instant access to earned wages through WhatsApp, addressing a critical need for flexible financial solutions among frontline workers. The platform has since expanded to offer a range of HR and employee benefits services, now utilized by over 200 companies and reaching 250,000 users.
The new funding will support Jem’s vision of becoming the leading workforce management platform for deskless employees—those who don’t primarily use email for work communication. The company plans to add features like time-and-attendance tracking, credit score integration, and employee assistance programs (EAPs) to its existing suite of services.
“Employers have spent years stitching together a dozen disparate systems to run their teams,” said Jem co-founder and CEO Simon Ellis. “Jem is now the one place they can do all of it.”
The platform’s WhatsApp-based interface provides essential access for employees without email, including company announcements, payslips, leave requests, and financial wellness resources.
Quona Capital’s venture partner Johan Bosini noted that Jem sits at a powerful intersection: “Essential workforce software that lets companies build deeper relationships with their people, trusted employer distribution, and embedded financial services that save everyday South Africans meaningful amounts.”
The round also included participation from University Technology Fund, E4E, Next176/FutureGrowth, and angel investors like former Old Mutual CEO Iain Williamson.
