Powering African Innovation: Google’s New Accelerator Supports AI Startups

Google has announced the opening of applications for its Google for Startups Accelerator program tailored for South Africa. This three-month initiative will provide 15 growth-stage startups focused on artificial intelligence with equity-free funding, technical mentorship, and access to Google’s cutting-edge technologies.

The program forms part of Google’s broader commitment to support 50 South African startups between 2024 and 2028. Each selected startup will receive up to ZAR1 million (approximately US$60,000) in funding, allowing founders to maintain full ownership while accelerating their growth.

Access to Advanced AI Resources

Beyond the financial investment, participants gain direct access to Google’s AI tools, cloud infrastructure, and models—including hands-on experience with Gemini. This technical support aims to strengthen products and enhance capabilities for local market needs.

The program specifically targets South African startups led by historically disadvantaged individuals or groups that are developing functional, AI-driven solutions. The hybrid curriculum runs from September 28th to December 4th, offering personalized mentorship and addressing critical challenges in product development, data strategy, and operations.
