Alan Expands Globally with Acquisition of Tanel, Entering African Market

Alan Enters Africa Through Strategic Tanel Acquisition

Prevention-focused health insurer Alan has finalized its acquisition of Tanel, a digital health company based in Dakar, Senegal. This marks Alan’s first foray into the African market and represents a significant exit for Francophone Africa’s growing healthtech sector.

Addressing Healthcare Gaps in West Africa

Tanel was founded in 2021 by Mouhamed Ndoye and Makhtar Diop to address fragmented employee healthcare systems. The platform provides digital tools that simplify coverage management, improve access to care, and enhance transparency for both employers and employees. Currently serving over 70,000 members across more than 400 companies in Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire, Tanel connects users with a network of 1,200+ pharmacies and healthcare providers.

Synergistic Partnership

Alan initially invested in Tanel during its seed round and has since collaborated closely with the founders. This partnership allowed Alan to gain firsthand knowledge of Tanel’s technology and operating environment while building alignment on their shared vision for digital health solutions. For Tanel, joining Alan provides access to additional resources and expertise to accelerate growth.

Expansion Plans & Market Opportunity

The combined entity aims to reach over 1 million members across Africa by 2030, initially focusing on Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire before expanding into other markets. With a health insurance market estimated at €600 million and growing annually by 10%, the region presents significant opportunity for Alan’s prevention-focused approach.

Alan CEO Jean-Charles Samuelian-Werve stated: “Technology can help deliver [healthcare] at scale, but it has to be paired with teams that understand their markets. Tanel has done the hard work of building relationships with users, companies, healthcare providers and regulators in Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire.”

Tanel co-founder Mouhamed Ndoye added: “When we started Tanel, we quickly realized that much of the infrastructure we needed was missing… Joining forces with Alan gives us more technology and resources to move faster.”

The acquisition provides an exit for Tanel’s founders and investors, including Ventures Platform, AAIC Investment, and various angel investors.
