Airtel Africa to Invest Heavily in Network Expansion Across the Continent
Airtel Africa Bets on Spectrum and Fibre for Future Growth
Airtel Africa has announced that a significant portion of its $1.1 billion capital expenditure (CAPEX) planned for 2026 will be allocated to acquiring spectrum licenses and expanding fibre optic networks across its 14 African markets.
This strategic investment aims to enhance network quality, improve customer experience, and capitalize on the growing demand for high-speed mobile data services. According to CEO Sunil Taldar, Africa’s increasing smartphone penetration creates a massive opportunity that requires expanded coverage.
“If you look at Africa, we see a huge opportunity with smartphone adoption,” Taldar stated in an interview with Arise News. “To realize this, what we need to do is expand our network reach.”
The company will prioritize investments in both mobile spectrum and fibre infrastructure to support data-intensive applications and emerging services like home broadband.
Recent Regulatory Approvals
Airtel recently secured approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for a 10-year renewal of its 900MHz spectrum license, with a fee of $37 million (₦50.5 billion at an exchange rate of ₦1,365/$1). This will enable continued mobile services in Nigeria’s largest market.
Addressing Infrastructure Security Concerns
Taldar also highlighted ongoing challenges related to fibre cuts and vandalism, which remain major threats to network reliability. He noted that telecom operators experience an average of 500 fibre cuts per week, despite infrastructure being designated as critical national assets.
“The increase in damage to fibre cables and theft of equipment leads to continuous network outages,” Taldar warned. “We need more concerted effort to protect this vital infrastructure.”
The company’s Q2 2026 earnings report showed revenue increasing by 31% year-on-year to $1.85 billion, driven by growth in both data and voice services. With a customer base nearing 190 million across Africa, Airtel is well-positioned to benefit from the continent’s digital transformation.
