Africa’s Business Heroes Selects Top 20 Entrepreneurs

The Africa’s Business Heroes (ABH) Prize Competition, a philanthropic initiative of Alibaba Philanthropy, has announced the 20 entrepreneurs who will advance to its 2026 Semi-Final in Nairobi, Kenya. These individuals were selected from an expanded pool of over 24,000 applicants representing all 54 African countries.

The Top 20 underwent rigorous evaluation, including three-person judging panel interviews and on-site visits conducted by PlusVC. This comprehensive process assessed leadership qualities, innovation potential, impact scalability, and commercial strength—ensuring that those selected possess both vision and operational depth.

A Diverse Cohort Ready to Compete

The 2026 cohort represents 12 African countries and spans 11 sectors including agriculture, healthcare, manufacturing, climate technology, financial services, education, energy, and more. Notably, women entrepreneurs comprise 40% of the group.

Collectively, these businesses generated approximately US$85 million in revenue during 2025—demonstrating their current impact while highlighting significant growth potential. The selection process prioritized not only financial performance but also community legitimacy and resilience—qualities essential for long-term success in African markets.

Beyond the Competition

The ABH program extends beyond the semi-final stage, offering continued support through initiatives like the annual Hangzhou learning and market-access trip to China. This year’s trip will bring together approximately 40 participants from across Africa for a week of immersive learning and networking.

The return to Nairobi as host city carries both symbolic and practical significance—Nairobi has emerged as one of Africa’s leading hubs for technology, entrepreneurship, and investment, attracting ambitious founders, established businesses, and global investors alike. The 2026 Semi-Final is expected to welcome a larger investor audience than previous editions, creating valuable engagement opportunities for participating entrepreneurs.

The distinguished judging panel for this year’s semi-final includes Kome Oruade-Etim (Acumen Angels), Wandia Gichuru (Vivo Fashion Group), and Thomas Njeru (Pula Advisors)—bringing together perspectives from investment, operations, and entrepreneurship to evaluate the finalists.
